Top 5 Theme Marketplaces
Sunday, September 21 by DanielSo you’ve made a beautiful Wordpress Theme, and you want to make some cash off of it.
When deciding where you are going to sell your Wordpress theme, a few things need to come into consideration. Firstly, are you planning on reselling it? If its a one time deal you’re going to want to charge a lot more for it. Secondly, do you want your marketplace to take a commission off of your sale? Usually the ones that skim give you a better chance of a sale, but you might take your chances with a free or flat submission fee to make the most from your hard work. Below I’ll be reviewing some great places to sell themes.
1. ThemeForest

ThemeForest, launched by the guys from PSDTUTS, offers a great way to sell your templates an unlimited amount of times, unfortunately they take a large commission (75%.) If you're willing to stick it out there the commission rate eventually goes down to 50%.
2. SitePoint MarketPlace

This is a great marketplace for selling your themes, charges $10 to list. Lots of stuff gets sold there, and you don't have to worry about a percent taken off on your sale! Great for one-time sales.
3. YaXay

A nice place to unload some cheaper themes. I used to post my stuff here and Sitepoint years ago when I was just starting out. Fond memories!
4. TalkFreelance

Another good forum, sales here tend to lean on the cheap side. Still a good resource. Costs no money to list.

Gosh, 75% sounds extortionate! Is that really within the range of the going rate? How many more sales are you likely to get on a pay site than a free one like TalkFreelance?
Another good theme marketplace is http://www.templamatic.com
Nice list, mate, although it’s in far future to create unique wordpress themes, because it takes a lot of time - at least for me..
wow didn’t know ThemeForest took such a large commision!
@Dainis Graveris
Haha, its not too bad actually if you know how to code html/css. If you’re ever looking for some help I might be able to give you a few tips. Just let me know (via twitter.)
@ Dainis: The first WP theme I ever created was an absolute nightmare. The second one was only slightly less of a nightmare. The third one was basically a breeze, and I’m confident my 4th, 5th, 6th etc. will continue to get easier. You just got to do it a few times, then you get the hang of it, you know where stuff is, what’s different about WP than a regular theme, and then it becomes just as easy as creating any other type of site.
@ TF skeptics: ThemeForest from what I’ve read is hugely successful for a startup. They sell a lot more themes than many well-established theme marketplaces. That coupled with the fact that you can quickly get 50% once you’ve proven yourself, I think ThemeForest is a great deal.
But if you’re going to avoid them because you can’t think logically (25 % of something > 100% of nothing) then that’s fine with me, less competition!
You can also check out http://templatica.com/ You can buy individual templates for as low as $5 and join their club for $24 a year.
